Renal stones, or kidney stones (also called nephrolithiasis, urolithiasis, or renal calculi), are mineral and/or salt deposits that develop within the kidneys due to excessively concentrated urine.  Kidney stones can impact any part of the urinary tract and result from diets especially high in salt, high body weight, certain medical conditions, and some supplements and medications. 

Passing a kidney stone can be rather painful.  In some instances, you may simply need pain medication and lots of water to pass the stone, but in other cases, you may need surgical intervention, especially if the stone is stuck in the urinary tract.
