Chronic kidney disease is the term for a gradual decline in the performance of the kidneys.  Waste and excess fluids are not able to be extracted from the blood and released into urine, and this can result in a problematic buildup in the body.  Early stages may not reveal any symptoms and, in many cases, you may not feel the effects until kidney function is already quite deteriorated. 

To treat chronic kidney disease, the focus is slowing the progression and controlling any underlying causes for the disease.  If left unchecked, chronic kidney disease can lead to end-stage renal disease, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.
