Acute kidney injury (AKI) manifests with a rapid failure of kidney function, which can be partial or total.  This usually occurs as a result of an underlying serious condition and generally not associated with physical trauma (as the name seems to indicate). 

Acute kidney injury usually comes about in the elderly with other illness.  It is crucial that acute kidney injury be diagnosed early and that appropriate care protocols are implemented rapidly so to prevent the build-up of metabolic wastes in the body, which can cause damage to other organ systems.  Total kidney failure due to acute kidney injury may require the implementation of dialysis.
